Software Random

If you use AVG free there was a software update that caused a severe memory leak. It took down my system in about 2 hours after the reboot. I have 16gb ram. I was able to (after a "hold the power button" shutdown) uninstall, reboot, then reinstall AVG. It got rid of the problem. but on a lower spec'd system you might be fighting the clock on getting it uninstalled.
Just thought I'd "put it out there" incase someone else ran across it.

I ran into a issue like that on my old system that had 24gb of ram.  Only a few hours of use, cpu usage was high and memory usage was through the roof.  I actually had to do a system restore and let everything update again.

I was pretty sure I was gonna here from a bunch of my clients but not a peep. Must have been a rarer combo of circumstance than I thought it would be.

For me, it was a botched windows 7 update that seemed to be behind the cause.

Most of your clients would not be able to tell what is going on and just would accept the computer is getting "slower". I wouldn't rule out that it is happening to them as well.  Also you always put AVG Free on all your client's computers. Have you thought of perhaps a different Antivirus software?

This wasn't a gradual problem if the person had the problem with less ram (most of my clients) it would have been total crash and lockups pretty quick. With 16 gigs of ram I was able to fix it before I hit the swap file If I had 8 or less I would have probably had to try and work in safe mode to prevent crashing.
And yeah, I have thought about switching. AVG has just been getting worse since Avast took over them. I just have to start researching what's still free and good out there now. haven't had time yet. And I only install AVG on some ones system if they ask or if they are infected and don't have anything installed.

For the most part, I've just been sticking with windows security essentials.  It's free and really not that bad.

If you use a chromium based browser and a popup blocker this might be of interest to you.

Good to know.  I use Edge dominantly, but I also use Firefox as well.  And I have adblockers on both.

Edge is a chrome based browser. pretty sure it's one of the ones where he's saying the popup blockers will fail in Edge soon too. I just use my popup blocker on Firefox. but I use the same 2 browsers.

I am aware the Edge is Chromium based.  Same with dozens of other browsers out there now too.  But removing the use of adblockers could open the door for more phishing scams, and that worries me.

I refuse to use Google Chrome myself.  Unfortunately, chromium is everywhere now.  You really can't get away from it.

Google Chrome and MS Edge seem to now be the 2 main ones for Windows at the moment like IE of old.
