SpinTires
« on: July 23, 2014, 08:53:55 pm »
I had picked up this game called SpinTires.

http://store.steampowered.com/app/263280/

It's an off road driving simulator where you get to drive some beastly Russian trucks through some challenging terrain.  And there are some objectives to do to help keep you entertained as well.

I would love to play coop with some friends if anyone would be interested?

Well maybe a video of someone else playing might give people an idea of the gameplay?

I've watched a number of videos from Tomcat and most of his were with using the demo version of this game.  I like how he just keeps on talking though.

Well now I started getting some screenshots and here is one of the mods I picked up from spintires-mods.com.  It's a T150K loader and I just used it to load this trailer.  I like this thing.

Now, if I can just find a forwarder and maybe a forestry harvester, I would be set for logging.  ;D

Well, after spending a lot of time playing this game and earning all 50 achievements, I finally wrote a review of what I thought about the game.  Here is what I said.

Quote
This game is revolutionary in the realm of off-road driving simulators as I don't believe there is anything else out there quite like SpinTires.  There is a very impressive realism to the terrain and with the environment all together.  And it can get very unforgiving to the novice explorer.  There is a fair array of trucks to drive and the majarity of them are off-road purpose built, russian military trucks that look quite unstoppable.

There is more to this game then just getting stuck waist high in sucking mud, high centering on large rocks or fallen trees or swamping out the engine in deep waters.  You can winch yourself out of tough places.  Plow over trees that get in your way.  Keep in mind, the bigger the truck your driving, the bigger the tree you can crush.  Run fuel and repair supplies to broken down trucks.  Open up other garage places and even haul logs to lumber mills.  In fact, the main objective is to haul lumber to the mills through the most challenging terrain imaginable.  And if that's not enough, you can team up with up to 3 of your friends and tackle the challenge together.

The game currently does have some draw backs though.  The camera still needs some work as it can get difficult to see where you want to look.  Especially when your in a tight group of trees, on a steep hill or working with the crane.  The manual transmission mode is awkward and clumsy but you will get use to it over time.  And the multiplayer mode is very lacking.  Yes, you can help your friends by winching them out of tight places or giving them fuel or repairs.  But you can't see their lights, hear their trucks engines or see what they have done to the terrain after they have driven over it.  You can't help your friends load lumber and you can't see your friends trucks that they have abandoned.  Only the trucks they are currently using.

Over all, the game is pretty well put together and while being played in hardcore mode, can offer a challenge to even the most seasoned off-roaders.  Given all that I have said, there is a certain level of fun to this game that will have you coming back for more.  And if the creators of this game do something to address the issues I had mentioned above, it would make this game so much more enjoyable.

Here is the link.

For anyone interested, I have written a mod for SpinTires called Swamp Monsters and is actually a featured mod on the official spintires web site.

It's basically an enhancement of the default trucks, giving them more power, higher suspension, bigger tires and loads more features.  It also comes with 2 additional trucks to swap out for the default Zil 130.

There is currently no multiplayer mod support at the moment, but if you use the JSGME Mod Enabler, you can play it online with friends.

I have been steadily plugging away with updating my swamp monsters mod for spintires and I have been learning quite a few tricks along the way.  I've put a lot of time into this mod at this point, and the evidence is starting to show.  And now the devs over at spintires forums are saying that mod support is right around the corner.  I CAN'T WAIT!

That honestly does not surprise me. You have been putting your full attention into it outside of work that I hardly see you lol. I know this makes you happy as there isn't the calling anymore for NS or TFC mod support like there used to be. You are a natural at this and it is good to see you into active modding again that is once again appreciated :)
