Server failure
« on: January 21, 2017, 01:31:57 am »
Well, as some of you may already know, the old gateway computer we had as a server died January 15th 2017.  Terminal main board failure.  It gave us many solid years of service but nothing lasts forever.  Especially electronics that are left running non stop.  Anyway, I had planned on replacing the old server with a newer one that I spent a good deal of time preparing.  But I had dreaded reinstalling MYSQL so much that I had left it aside.  But after the recent server failure, I had no choice to but to finish the job I had started.

To save time and trouble, I was able to recover the HDD from the old server and add it to the new one as a slave.  No software reinstalling was actually required for this.  Well, with the exception of the DNS client.  That had to be installed fresh.  But the game servers, website, forums and SQL database were all intact.  I only needed to make all the required directory structure changes.  It was a bit of a challenge for me.  But as you can see, it worked out fine.

The new server specs have been updated on the server info page on the main site, for those who are interested to know those details.  But for the most part, the new server is essentially new.  Meaning it was bought new, assembled, setup, and almost never used.  Just sat for a couple of years in the box the new case came in.  I have since updated the bios, replaced the thermal compound on every heatsync, added more and faster ram and gave it a SSD boot drive.  As well as give it one of my old graphics cards.  So in short, we finally have a server that can run source mods, no problem.

With this there are still some things that need your attention such as the ability to attach images again to the forums.  It appears that you need to reinstall the GD module. Also there might be a few spammers able to get in depending on other settings that are now at default. I have noticed activity from 185.169.229.70 but only viewing so this made me feel you and I should keep vigilant watch just in case.

Edit:

The thing is, PHP comes with the GD module and it WAS enabled before.  I have not had any luck enabling it again as of yet.  But I am working on it.  All previous security features should still be intact because nothing has changed.

Well editing that line and re-enabling it seems to have worked. I can now attach images. I just hope you did not disable security to allow it to be so.

Actually, it didn't work.  I just did a little work around until I get this fixed.  With how few still post here and that no new members can sign up, I think we should be ok for a short while.

Okay, so I am finding out that web programs like PHP and PERL need to be installed on the main HDD because they need to interact directly with windows locally.  Having them reside on a slave drive does not appear to allow for this to happen.  So yeah.  It looks like all the PHP extension modules are able to load now.  If anyone spots any more bugs, please let me know.

Well we suddenly have spammers again so I wonder if our spam fighting plugins are not in. I know the one that uses a honeypot won't work since I shut my site down but I believe I have a list of honeypots somewhere.. That will help. But the Stop Spammer one should be in and I don't see it.

We suddenly have spammers again because I opened up allow registration but requires admin approval.  And as far as I know, all the plugins and modules are working as intended.
