Title: Best Canadian Digital Phone companies to try?
Post by: KT 💣 KλBoƠM on August 06, 2020, 10:55:19 pm
I am with Distributel and all day today I have had no home phone. I am frustrated because I almost missed out on Halabut dinner with my mom because the door buzzer works through this phone system and with the phone down she could not buzz me to let me know she was hear to pick me up.

I am thinking of switching to another company as this one never gave me good service (buzzing on the line or lots of static or just plain unreliable).

This means all day today (Thursday) I have missed all calls that have tried to reach me. Can't even check the voice mail.

I don't know what to tell you KT.  But it looks like you need to do some research in your area.

I just spent over 2 hours on the phone with them and got my Home Phone through Distributel back up. For now.

What was the problem?  Did they have you try and reboot the device?  ::)

Yes it does actually.  But plugging your routers and modems into a battery backup unit, does help reduce this problem.

Probably would, I just don't have a UPS at the moment. I have to get around to ordering a battery.

You can always Google it and find a decent price.

I will get to it eventually. It's been dead for years.

I did tell my mom that but the price intimidates her. Yet clothes shopping ... well .. different story. lol :P

It just shows what your mom's priorities are.

Very few home pc users invest in a UPS.

True. My mom doesn't know what one is so I have to keep reminding her. Her power doesn't go out a lot so it is not really that important for her to spend the money on one but I have no regrets about buying one. I had to order a replacement battery so far only once and it wasn't that hard to put in. I like the security it gives me to not lose whatever I am working on even if it is just a brownout that I get.

It's not just power losses that a ups system can protect your sensitive electronics from.  It's also power spikes from lightning strikes or lost of power in nearby areas and power dips from sudden power strains on the grid.  Even a simple high joules rated surge protector would be enough for some folks.

I can tell her that in email. :) That is useful. Do you think she should buy one?

As for my digital home phone service. With the Uniden cordless phone set, Dave gave me I am going to test if it is indeed the service or the Panasonic phone itself I am using.

I really can't say for sure.  But I would highly doubt that the problem lies with the phone itself.  Since they are cordless and generally only need power for charging and powering the base unit.  Digital modems and computers on the other hand are very sensitive to power fluctuations and will seriously benefit from a UPS.

My mom hates how the phone sounds and blames the phone while I just blame digital and the phone modem.

Well that makes for a interesting question.  Did your mom have the same phone on analog and digital service?

Only I have went digital. My parents still have the old set up and my brothers have only cell phones. I am the only one with digital home phone with the cheapest company I could find.

Have you tried replacing her (phone) cord?  ... humidity corrosion and all.

Apparently, we completely misunderstood you.  We thought you were saying that your mom hate's HER phone.

Ok, I think she's saying her mom hates the sound quality of her phone. KT was going to try a phone set I gave her to see if it is the phones or the service causing the crappy sound. Easier to try another phone than switch services only to find it is your crappy phone (at least I think that's what she means).

Moisture static is something I am very familiar with beings I lived in one apartment where the phone wire was in the public stairwell and then came up to my apartment and had rain in it all the time. This isn't the same. It will sound perfect on my end but my mom will hear only echo or other noise but only when calling me.

That is exactly what I meant. I did a test call to my mom and she said it was better. We will see if consecutive calls are just as good. Thanks :)

Well, it sounds fine to me on this end.  But then again, I was the one who called you.
