I was thinking of the future of Microsoft and its Windows 10 and how Microsoft has always been a monopoly for so many years now (since in early 90's but it seemed they calmed down but as we see with Windows 10 they haven't really changed) and I got to thinking how one day we might have to change from Windows to a different Operating System. So I thought I would start this topic as I don't know how many other Operating Systems would be compatible with the games I play.

When doing a search I came across something that interested me:

There are many operating systems out there that are free yet we pay for Windows. Why? Compatibility for the most part. But here are some of the ones I am looking at.

I am considering dual boot as I like to stick with what I know (why I still use a graphic program from 1992 lol). This way I can check out and see what other OS I like without giving up Windows just yet. After all I have been using Windows since 3.1.1

Hog Wash!!  I can't see how they can make that claim.  There is no software in the world that is safe from hackers.  Where it is true that Linux is not directly effected by Windows viruses, there are viruses written to effect Linux.  Just no where near as many.  I feel it's because Linux and Mac are not as widely used as Windows is.  And that's because it (as you so well put it) boils down to compatibility.  Since Windows is the dominate OS out there, most of the software written is made to run on Windows.

Sure, many will say that windows get attacked because it's costs money and Linux is free.  Okay, partially true.  True that you can in fact download most versions of Linux for free.  But false because some versions of Linux do cost money.  Generally enterprise editions like Red Hat.  And then there is Mac OS.  It costs money too.  But the user base is still so small compared to Windows and Linux.  And the main reason for that is because it's not compatible with anything else and has so little software options.

Sorry about the rant.  That statement just got me going.

Heheh ya I think the argument that Windows gets hacked more because it costs money is real weak honestly.  Hacking happens for many reasons varying from stealing information (logins, financial, etc) as well as attempting to use computers as "zombie computers" to send out spam to others without being traced back to the actual culprit. The cost vs. free claim only really holds ground where it comes to cracking programs.

Well, it seems to revolve around all that hate for Bill Gates and something about a falling out between MS and Mac.  I never truly understood all that nonsense.  Nor do I care about it.  But the fact still remains that some have thrown that excuse out there.

But on a side note, I have toyed with other OS options through the years and have always found myself coming back to Windows.  Simply because everything I want or need on my computer runs seamlessly in Windows.  And I don't need an emulator or have to wait for someone to port a program or game over.  Or have to deal with lack of support, bugs or draw backs caused by those processes.  IMO, Linux is still lacking in being a true user friendly OS.  But, they have been making great strides lately.  So who knows what the future holds.

Ya true. I agree with all you said. Especially for me who doesn't like change and likes to stick with what I know instead of learning and doing things all over again (me who doesn't like to redo Windows or use newer programs because I have to feel lost until I learn it again lol)
