Title: Cool hardware stuff
Post by: Sandman[SA] on April 28, 2021, 12:43:18 am
Some people have asked me about SSD's and M.2 storage devices.  This guy explains it well.

Nice!

I just came across this guy trying out Microsoft's Leaked Windows 11

On a severe Hail Mary, I tried taking the circuit board off a no longer functioning hard drive that I had in my multi media storage server that had just died recently. I have a screw driver kit that fit the 6 point star pattern screws on the drive so since there were some hints of maybe bad contact, I figured nothing to loose but some time.
took out the screws on the circuit board carefully pulled it away from the bottom of the drive as not to rip the foam padding between the surfaces used a pencil eraser (soft) to clean the discolored contacts on either side of the board and carefully reassembled the drive.
Shockingly it is back from the click of death that it was doing before I tried this. Now I wouldn't recommend continued use of a once failed drive but I have another a 2tb that I wasn't able to pull data from about 8 years ago that I just tried the same on and am pulling data successfully from to a backup drive as I write this (and at a surprisingly good speed too).
Just thought it was some usefull info. if you drop a drive, this won't work. has nothing to do with physical damage. but sometimes drives just stop working, and this might just get you a chance to get you data like I seem to have.

I stumbled across this awesome computer case mod from Nerdforge that you really need to see.

That girl is a really good diorama artist.  She does some truly amazing work.

I thought this was entertaining.  It's a forums mini PC that can fit in your pocket and is just as gaming capable, if not, more so then KT's current rig.  It's crazy how much tech is changing.

Cool yes, I like the products, but they don't have a Canadian website and wouldn't be practical for her for storage reasons.

Storage is limited in default trim, for sure.  Unless it has a M.2 expansion slot.  4tb M.2 drives have come way down in price lately.  But the main argument for a device like this is it's actual size and capabilities.  Shocking what it can do.

As a travel computer it would be great for her but she keeps too much stuff on her main computer.

I think a lot of us have fallen victim to being a bit of a digital hoarder.  lol.  Myself included.

If her current storage usage was converted over to SSD's it would cost more than the computer just for that, but yeah I hate doing the digital house cleaning too.

No doubt about that.  When I got my 4tb NVMe drive, that thing was about $800 USD.  Now that same size and type of storage is nearly half that cost.  But now you can get 2tb SSD's for under $150 USD.

Here is a great example.  Team Group CX2 2.5" 2TB SATA III 3D TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) (https://www.newegg.com/team-group-2tb-cx2/p/N82E16820331573?Item=N82E16820331573&utm_medium=Email&utm_source=promo&utm_campaign=EMC-Automation062123-_-EMC-062123-Index-_-Internal%20SSDs-_-N82E16820331573&ignorebbr=1&cm_mmc=EMC-Automation062123-_-EMC-062123-Index-_-Internal%20SSDs-_-N82E16820331573&ignorebbr=1&cvtc=36805803)  Only $62 at the time of this post.

I can't afford it with the CRV right now and using so much gas driving my mom around as it is with the price of gas. I have an SSD already as my main (C:/) drive but am still using my old HDD for other drives which Dave said to use as storage instead of having games and programs on SSD. His suggestion so that is what I did.

From all things I've read, SSD's tend to die faster if they get full. I didn't want her killing off the fastest part in her computer at the time. She has a habit of loading down her C: drive, I tried to make it clear if she did that with the SSD it will die sooner.

What kills SSD drives is writing and deleting of data.  LOT'S OF DATA!  Reading has little to no impact.  But for the average gamer that generally plays the same handful of games, an SSD will last decades.  Case in point.  The SSD that is in my old gaming rig is nearly 10 years old and still reports nearly 3/4 of it's suggested service life remaining.

Now, SSD's, just like any other storge media, will slow down as they reach past 2/3rd of it's total storage capacity.  So a good rule to stand by is to offload what you don't need on your SSD and keep it under 1/2 capacity.  This way, when nan cells start to die out, you still have plenty of space for any data that is still good, to migrate to other good cells.

The part about ssd's slowing when getting 2/3rds full isn't true, it's digital storage not mechanical. If anything makes it slower it would be wear and a fuller drive increases the wear rate.

That is more or less what I was trying to say.  But crystal disk mark will prove that SSD's will slow down a little as they get close to max compacity.

Even though slower, I have all my games on my D drive (2G HDD I think was the size?) and my C is the SSD which I try to keep under 50% as Dave told me not to let it get full like my other drives.

2Tb you mean, right?

If she's talking about the last drive she put in I think it was a 4 tb.

With how bad my SSA (Severe Sleep Apnea) has effected my memory it is best to go with what Dave says it is. 4Tb, because I honestly cannot remember right now.

Yes that one. But now I can't get it to load on the new PC. So check the thread on the new PC (http://www.killerz.dns2go.com/smfbb20/index.php?topic=202.msg2476#msg2476) and please offer suggestions for me as the solution I thought it might be isn't it.

Ok.  That makes much more sense.  My games drive is 4Tb too.
