Title: Computers are shrinking
Post by: KT 💣 KλBoƠM on October 14, 2023, 11:03:50 am
I remember how you told me how computers are shrinking and I was amazed at how small they are becoming!

As of now, you can get a system so small that it can be attached to the back of a monitor.  And pack enough performance to play most, if not all of your favorite games at reasonable frame rates.

Arm technology is still a good way off to be practical.  But times are changing quickly.

Tell me about it.  Did you know there are Arm based server systems with socket-able processors even larger and have more cores than AMD's latest threadripper processor?

I'm pretty sure that Threadripper and ARM based servers are not used for the same type of tasks.
Also most of these micro form factor computers are based on mobile hardware CPU's GPU's and priced higher than a laptop with simillar specs. there has been a micro gaming pc space in the market for quite a while, it's not new just expensive so not as popular, there are changes coming but I super doubt it will be night to day like is describing. and far from over night.

Very true.  Arm based servers do a completely different task.

Actually, the minis forum PC comes with desktop CPU's.  The last one I saw had a R5 7600 desktop processor.  The Apple machines are using Arm SOC's.  The last Intel Nuc had a 12 gen Intel desktop processor.  I don't know what some other micro computers are using.  But some of the really low end ones are using low powered laptop CPU's.

Generally even if they technically use desktop CPU's they are usually low wattage models made just for the usff market. with similar wattages to the mobile counterparts, but usually much less than the desktop parts.

Absolutely.  They are low watt use CPU's.  The R5 7600 is a 65 watt chip.  The minis forum system is tuned to manage the heat by using the chassis as an additional active heat sync.  You really should check out some reviews of this thing.  It's much more powerful than you think.

I just said that they use lower watt parts, didn't say weak parts.
