Katie's New PC (2023) - The Journey!
« on: August 28, 2023, 05:25:48 pm »
So OneEyed and Sandman thank you for building me my new PC. My Power Supply I got with you Jeff when you were in my city finally died so Dave is thinking of using this 700 W since my 750 W went "POP" and then no power and no light on the motherboard.

This thread is where we will update how the rebuild / upgrade is going and ETA on when I will be ready to play 7DTD on the SA 7DTD Server.

I have unstickied the old thread that mentioned Windows 11 or sticking to Windows 10 for my PC but am linking it here just for easy reference: Windows 11. Can KT's PC handle it??

EDIT: New PCU will come Friday. Thanks guys for your help: Apevia ATX-GX850W Galaxy 850W 80+ Gold Certified Active PFC ATX Semi-Modular Gaming Power Supply for $115.98 Cdn.

I would recommend sticking with Win 10 for now.  But the 8th gen Intel processor can run Win 11 just fine if you're using a 9th gen Intel board.  I'm not sure if an 8th gen Intel board has this support.  You would have to enable the integrated TPM though if the BIOS hasn't been updated in a while.

Dave will most likely do that for me. Right Dave?

I already changed from MBR to GPT, enabled TPM 2.0 and secureboot. she might have to reactivate windows though. But the PC Health Tool shows you are ready for win 11.

I kept Dave here really really late until everything worked .. or I thought. Currently there was no net again so I did what Dave did. Seems the Ethernet Cable I have been using doesn't fit snugly enough so I will be using another one .. probably the yellow one I am using in the very old laptop I got from my dad which can't even handle the most basic of games. (Thank  you Dave for letting me use your gaming laptop. It rocked). Another thing is my external won't show up in the list of drives. Watching a video on that and looks like it could be a drive letter issue (I think most likely as Dave did not have that at his place when he had all the other drives in the PC) so I can fix that on my own. Other than that I have not played ANY games yet as I am lacking sleep and a doctor called at 8am and then I had to take my pills at 11am and then mom called at 2pm and with my sleep apnea and broken up sleep ... well yes I am exhausted. Dave doesn't sleep well neither so today will be a day of rest for him.

Other than that everything looks great. I had to adjust the font size on the monitor because with it being this close to my face I can't see clearly and with my glasses it still wasn't perfect to read with my eyes. I hate having an astigmatism. Dave knows what that is like and it is nice to have someone who understands but his vision is much worse than mine so I learned to be patient with his help. He really went well beyond the scope of a tech as he is also my friend and I wanted to extend a grateful thank you Dave!

Sorry for the double post but that wasn't it. It wasn't even listed there to change the drive letter. I need your guys help. The computer knows it is connected as it makes a noise but it is not listed anywhere. Not even listed in "Open Devices" or "Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media"

Attached are 2 screenshots.

Okay talked to Dave who was telling me about the drive letter even though I already checked that but as any good tech he was going through a list of the obvious first. Then he was out of ideas except to hook it back up to the laptop to see if it would read. I noticed I had no net on there so I had to reset the modem (which for some reason did not work with my (my dad's old) laptop. But even without internet on that old thing I was able to see that the external (ClickFree) wasn't showing up there neither. So I knew it had power and I had already tried and tested the connection so the only thing I could think of is when all else fails go back to basics: Turn it off and on again. Then the ClickFree External connected to the laptop and works again !! Yeah! So I hooked it back up to my NEW PC and it is working! YAY!

This is what I see now:

I am also sharing it so Dave understands what I mean by J and I being my external as he was saying there should NOT be a partition so I figured I was just explaining it wrong. It always reads the part I don't access as a CD-ROM. Don't know why. Something to do with how Click Free does security on it I figure as it is meant to be a back up devices as well as secure but forget the details now all these years later after I bought it from Staples.

Wait.  You have an external drive with a 3.5 inch HDD inside?  I didn't know that those are still available.

Looks like you will have to update your profile info.

You can get those in size up to about 20TB just because SSD's are more popular and cheaper than they used to be doesn't mean they stopped selling them(hard drives). Costs about $500 can probably $600 taxes in for a 20TB hard drive You don't want to know how many thousands of dollars an SSD that size costs. so I think there is still a market for mechanical storage.

Oh heck I do have to update it but yes my external is old by now but just 5 years old. I haven't been able to afford anything new since my old disability caseworker had screwed me on my payments every month and was giving me only $986 to live on instead of the $1021 I was supposed to be getting every month. Now that I have a NEW disability case worker and our government finally increased how much we get per month since July ... I am currently getting $1067/mth to live on and pay bills and rent and food and gas with that I am doing better but just got that CR-V that I have to play catch up financially.

When I am better off I want to get bigger drives, SSD's instead of just 1 SSD and the 2 HDD's and I want to get a bigger case like we were talking about.

LIAN LI LANCOOL 216RX Black Steel / Tempered Glass ATX Mid Tower Computer Case ,2x 16 cm ARGB Fans Included ----LANCOOL 216RX

WD_BLACK SN850X NVMe M.2 2280 2TB PCI-Express 4.0 x4 Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) WDS200T2X0E

And I would like this colour scheme, since I no longer have the black mouse with blue fading lights that Beth had gotten me for my birthday one year.

but for now I am so grateful to you Jeff and Dave for your collaboration in my PC upgrade and bigger monitor.

Yes, especially in Canada.

Dave, can you list all you upgraded, so I can update my signature.

I also deleted the temp files from the upgrade Dave as we don't need them anymore right? All is running well.

I just freed up a lot more space on C.
Went from 275Gb free on my SSD to 526Gb free to 538Gb free and still going!
Steam made it easier to move files between drives. There were games I was unable to move before and some on C from 2021 that I now can move onto D where I want all my Steam games to be.
