I can't tell what is worse.  The fact that Microsoft has fallen down the AI cash grab rabbit hole.  Or all the AI generated scare tactics and propaganda.

Well, for the time being, Windows 10 is still a viable use case.  Given that you sign up for the free year of extended security update patches.  Unfortunately, even that won't be an option for much longer.  Now Windows won't stop working after it finally does go EOL.  It just stops getting security updates.  Switching to Linux for most users is another option.  Most distros have a very similar look and feel as Windows does on its surface.  And A LOT of older system hardware support is natively baked in.  Meaning, you most likely won't need to download any drivers to get your system working.  A downside is that a lot of Windows based programs and software you may have are not natively supported or even usable on Linux.  But there are a lot of alternatives and work arounds.  You'll just have to search for what suits your needs.

Darn .. my mom needs the "Dummy version".....

Any ideas?

There is always the tried and true Ubuntu.  It has a similar look and feel to windows and comes chock full of useful apps for everyday use.  For gamers like us, there is a lot more configuring to do.  But it should be okay for what your mom needs.

Thanks. That is what I was thinking but have held off because I don't want to hear her complaints about learning something new (heck Windows is still new to her and she has been using it now for years).

With all online security lessons I have given my mom, she still falls for AI. Recently she fell for a video where a priest supposedly said somethings but one look at it and I suspected AI and watching it I knew I was right. Lately there is a big trend on YouTube and Social Media (mainly TikTok, Facecbook and Instagram) posting videos of high profile people saying things that they never have said. These videos show their likeness and use their voice. It seems like them. On YouTube they are even making whole accounts that sound legit and desirable and have popular priests, political leaders, news casters, etc, with a whole video talking about big topic things that use a tiny bit of truth with a lot of exaggerated hyperbole.

All you need is a portable hard drive or a USB thumb drive.  Setup a live boot media and take it for a test drive.  If you don't like it, just remove the portable drive and reboot.  But if you do like it, you will have wipe out a drive and install it fresh.

Thanks Jeff. Ya I have made a bootable USB of an OS before. Okay so that is still the way then. Thank you :)

They say it is local but we already know they seriously encourage you to back up everything to their cloud and in the future there is a good chance that will be the main way.

Geek / Games Discussion / Re: Windows 11 - Do we want it or can we even handle it?

One Eyed called me recently saying that he has made a USB installer for a version of Windows 11 without all the AI bloat.

You can do that too with an application called Rufus.  You should take a look at it sometime.
