I have a 2001 Dodge Neon. My Horn hasn't worked for a few months. I figured that would be an easy fix but my brothers have no time. I was thinking of old style cars where the horn would stop working but the horn itself does work and the problem is in the steering wheel. Of course cars have changed over the years.... I accidentally came across this video and I got to thinking ... is the Horn and Air Bag light in my car related? The air bag light has been coming on lately for the past 2 or 3 weeks.

This video made me wonder:

My dash light actually says Air Bag. Not like my mom's 2001 Honda Civic which says SRS like in this video (this video does NOT have a Honda Civic):

The answer to your question, is a malfunctioning horn and air bag malfunction related?  Yes.  In the steering column, there is a device commonly referred to as a "clock spring".  Or what it's now called is a "steering wheel module", since modern cars have steering wheels with additional switches, buttons and air bags in them.  Not only does this device send power to the horn button/s, it also send signals to the air bag and switches in the steering wheel.  And if the ribbon cable in the steering wheel module were to break, nothing in the steering wheel will work.  Here is what one looks like.

Keep in mind, these things are not cheap and can be broken easily.  But replacing this should fix your problem.

Then I'd say, have the clock spring replaced.  I'm certain that is your problem.

My dad is getting old and doesn't work on cars anymore and Shawn works 2 jobs and after his jobs goes to see his son on the southwest end of the city and then comes back to the east end to sleep after midnight and gets up at 5am for work. The only one would be Lonnie but now that his wife is pregnant again he has taken on more responsibility with the kids when he isn't working and gets stressed easily.

Too bad you weren't here Jeff.

Dave do you have any ideas?

This might help a little with getting the steering wheel part off.

Might save you a few bucks getting one used from the junkyard.

I have a question for you or Dave. Since Windsor has switched to a computerized system where you can't go in and get the parts ... but look them up on the computer .. do they take the part and give it to you? That would be easier for me actually since I am weak (still from June .. gotta get my muscle back).  If so then Dave can put it in right?

I know that there are web sites like www.rockauto.com where you can order parts online and have them shipped directly to you.  But I don't know if this service is available in Canada or not.

Anyway, I don't know if your car has cruise control or not.  But here is the steering wheel module link.
